Health
Promotion
The Health Promotion Program continues to play a vital
role in helping people stay healthy. The goals of
the HP Program include facilitating healthy changes
at the individual, family, organizational, community
and policy levels. Conditions and behaviors related
to health are a primary focus. Approaches used include
direct provision of preventive services, health education,
collaboration, community capacity building and social
marketing. Community programs are aerobic classes,
Walking Strong programs, Spring N2 Summer, Just Move
It!, Comprehensive School Health, health fairs, and
Adventure Based Learning Workshops.
Abstinence Only
This program uses a cultural and curricular strategy
which is developmentally appropriate to the target population.
The underlying theme for the program is "Abstinence
until Marriage, through the curriculum of Sex Can Wait".
Diabetes
Prevention
The Health Promotion/Disease Prevention (HP/DP) Department
of Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation was awarded
slightly over $2,000,000 over five years by the Department
of Health and Human Services to participate in a demonstration
project in the area of primary prevention of diabetes.
It is estimated that the grant will impact the lives
of 450 Native Americans in the Tuba City service area.
Starting in October 2005, local efforts undertaken by
the Health Promotion/Disease Prevention Department will
begin in screening and recruiting individuals diagnosed
with pre-diabetes. Individuals diagnosed with pre-diabetes
will undergo a diabetes education intervention, which
is based on a group approach. Each Tuba City chapter
will have available to their community sixteen-week
group education sessions providing information on nutrition,
physical activity, coping strategies, as well as other
activities.
Office of Environmental Health

related diseases. Services available; injury prevention
