GETTING READY FOR YOUR SURGERY

BEFORE YOUR SURGERY

  1. For 1 week before and after surgery. NO alcohol, NO Motrin or Aspirin. You may take Tylenol for discomfort.
  2. The Night before surgery: DO NOT eat any food or drink any liquid after midnight. NO water, NO coffee, NO juice, NO snacks!
  3. Take all medications prescribed by your doctor
  4. RELAX!!

THE DAY OF YOUR SURGERY

  1. The Morning of surgery: NO breakfast, NO coffee, NO water, NO juice, NO gum, NO smoking.
  2. DO NOT take any medications for diabetes
  3. DO take your High Blood Pressure pills with one sip of water.
  4. You will need an adult to drive you here, wait for you and drive you home. You will NOT be able to drive yourself home. You must have someone stay with you overnight.
  5. If you come with Saferide or Native Resources you MUST bring an adult family member or friend with you.
  6. Do not bring children; leave jewelry and valuables at home. Do not wear make-up or nail polish. Wear loose comfortable clothing.

AFTER YOUR SURGERY

  1. Go right home. DO NOT drive
  2. Elevate your operative arm or leg above the level of your heart
  3. Be sure to take your:
    1. Antibiotics
    2. Pain medications
  4. DO NOT take any pain medicine (i.e. ibuprofen, motrin, etc) that your doctor does not prescribe.
  5. Keep your splint/cast, dressing clean, dry and intact. Wrap with plastic when showering
  6. Avoid activity. Your surgeon will let you know when you are ready to resume activities.
  7. Go to the nearest ER you have:
    1. Chest pain and difficulty breathing
    2. Dressing is too tight
    3. Dressing has excessive drainage
    4. Severe, uncontrolled pain
    5. Excessive nausea or vomiting
    6. Fevers, chills and aches
