Program Overview

Culture Language Resources Program oversees the Navajo Health Care Interpreters, which Provides:

  • Improved communication between Health Care Providers and Navajo patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP)
  • Address the provisions of health care
  • Interpretation services during the patient-provider interaction
  • Proficiency in the Navajo and /or Hopi Languages, Interpretation services during the patient provider interaction

The Role of Medical Interpreters

  • Clarifier: Request provider permission to explain complex theories or terminology
  • Conduit: Message passer
  • Cultural Broker: Explain differences in cultural beliefs and custom
  • Advocate: Ensure patient is being treated properly or direct patient to appropriate resources

Accurate Interpretation = Clinical Quality

  • Reduces medical errors and increases patient safety.
  • Increase patient compliance
  • Reduces unnecessary testing, charges and admissions
  • Increase patient satisfaction
