Dementia Program

The Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation (TCRHCC) Dementia Program is committed to improving the quality of care and support for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers in the Tuba City Service Area. Through a culturally responsive and interdisciplinary approach, the program focuses on increasing awareness, promoting early and accurate diagnosis, enhancing care coordination, and developing caregiver support services. By collaborating with local departments, community partners, and healthcare staff, the program aims to build a sustainable model of dementia care that honors the needs and traditions of our Native communities.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a general term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life.

What is Alzheimer's?

A specific disease that damages brain cells and is the most common cause of dementia.

Causes

Alzheimer's and dementia are caused by a combination of factors, including age, genetics, and lifestyle. Lifestyle and health factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, lack of exercise, smoking, and head injuries are also linked to an increased risk for both conditions.

Treatment

There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, but treatments focus on managing symptoms and, with new medications, slowing disease progression. Also, exercise, and a healthy diet, are also important for maintaining function and well-being.

Diagnosis

Medical and family history, physical and neurological exams, cognitive test, laboratory and Brain Imaging. Also seeing your primary health care provider.
