The Division of Environmental Health Services (DEHS) is a program under the Community Health Division whose goal is to reduce morbidity and mortality rates due to injuries and environmentally related diseases. The goal is achieved through the following services: an injury prevention program; compliance reviews and inspections of food sanitation systems; reviews and investigations of water, wastewater, and solid waste systems; reviews and inspections of public buildings; investigations of infectious diseases and outbreaks; and environmental health education.
The DEHS creates and maintains a dynamic organization that meets its’ objectives to the satisfaction of those being served and with a high degree of morale and sense of achievement on the part of those rendering the services. DEHS has four (4) staff to oversee the program operation.
The Injury Prevention Program collects injury data (hospitalized 24 hours or more) from the Emergency Department Log (ED Log) every month and fatality data from the Navajo Nation Criminal Investigation Program (NNCI) on a quarterly base. According to the recent injury data (FY 2021), falls is the number one cause of injuries and suicide is second. The program conducts seat belt and car seat surveys and provide results at health fairs, chapters, schools, and law enforcement agencies to encourage seat belt and car seat use. The program has an active Injury Prevention Committee to share and address injuries and implement injury prevention activities in the communities. DEHS also provides car seat education and provide car seats to low income families within the service area. DEHS provide program overview, educational information, data, and program services to senior leaders, board members, chapter officials, and affiliated local stakeholders.
Program staff also identify high-risk populations and factors contributing to injuries through an active Injury Surveillance System. DEHS also plans and implement community injury prevention activities, provide information, and technical assistance to communities on injury prevention.

The program also investigates reported foodborne illnesses and provide training for institutional facilities food service workers. In addition, the program helps with plan reviews and sanitary clearance (site evaluation) for new proposed food service establishments (e.g. restaurants, cafes, etc.) and public buildings.
