Norovirus Outbreak in nearby communities

We have received health alerts from the Navajo Nation on outbreaks of norovirus. Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea. Anyone can get infected and sick with norovirus. You can get norovirus from

  • Having direct contact with an infected person
  • Consuming contaminated food or water
  • Touching contaminated surfaces and then putting your unwashed hands in your mouth.

With cases identified in Kayenta and Northern Navajo Medical Center, providers at TCRHCC have seen patients in clinic with similar symptoms and we are actively monitoring the situation. Although noroviruses can be highly contagious, the infection can be prevented. It is very important to increase thorough hand washing with soap and water before eating and after using the restroom. And be aware ALCOHOL HAND SANITIZER is not effective against NOROVIRUS. Wash your hands well with soap and water whenever you are in contact with a person with vomiting or diarrhea. Frequent cleaning and disinfection with chlorine bleach products or a disinfectant registered as effective against norovirus should be used in-between visits for patients who are experiencing vomiting or diarrhea. Proper PPE should be worn when working with patients experiencing these sign and symptoms.

Keep in mind that vomiting and diarrhea can also be the only symptoms of COVID-19, especially in children. Encourage people experiencing these symptoms to get tested for COVID-19.

The best practice is to wash your hands.
