Following guidance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation (TCRHCC) is pausing administration of Jansen/Johnson & Johnson (Janssen/J&J) vaccines.
CDC and FDA are reviewing six cases of blood clots in women who were between the ages of 18 and 48. The women developed symptoms six to 13 days after receiving the Janssen/J&J vaccine. As of April 12th, more than 6.8 million doses of the Janssen/J&J vaccine have been administered across the U.S. so this event is truly a rare 1 in a million event.
This step by the CDC and FDA shows that the federal process for monitoring vaccine safety is working and provides confidence that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines continue to be safe and effective. Individuals who have not had a COVID19 vaccine should still get vaccinated with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines as soon as possible. Almost 200 million doses of these vaccines have been given in the US, saving lives and hospitalizations across the country and in our communities. You are still protected from COVID19 after receiving the Janssen/J&J vaccine and do not need another vaccine at this time.
If you received the Janssen/J&J vaccine and have any health concerns, particularly severe headaches, abdominal pain, leg pain or shortness of breath within 3 weeks of vaccination, please contact a health care provider. Mild headaches and body aches, some fever, and pain at the injection site in the first few days after receiving your vaccine are common temporary side effects from the body’s response to the vaccine and should go away in about 2 days.
