Health Promotion Disease Prevention

The Tuba City Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program is one of eight health promotion programs on the Navajo Reservation. Our health promotion program, along with the Navajo Area Indian Health Service (NAIHS) Health Promotion, designs and implements programs & services based on the Navajo Traditional Philosophy of “Hozhogoo Iina – Walk in Beauty” as represented by the Four Directions – East, South, West, and North. This concept is used because we believe that cultural integration with Western concepts of health promotion is important.

From the Four Directions, We Bring People, Families and Communities Together to Promote Wellness

The stated mission of “From the Directions of the East, South, West, and North, we bring people, families and communities together to promote wellness – Sa’?ah Naagaí Bik’eh Hózhóón Iiná” is the underlying message to empower individuals at all levels to increase their quality and years of healthy living. According to Navajo traditional teachings, a healthy person is one who is “in balance” supported and surrounded by a healthy family and a healthy community. Our program is responsible for working with eight chapters within the Western Navajo Agency as well as off-reservation border town communities. What makes our health promotion program unique from non-native communities is applying Navajo culture with primary prevention efforts to help people reach interdependence and sustaining healthy living.

Navajo Traditional Philosophy

EAST

Diné tradition is included into every dimension of ensuring families have a healthy start by sharing and celebrating strengths and values.

Providing each child with the skills and knowledge to lead a healthy lifestyle by creating partnerships with communities and schools to increase successful wellness programs and activities.

WEST

Empowering individuals to live in balance, harmony and beauty while being a part of strong, resilient families living with respect.

NORTH

Facilitating opportunities for elders to enrich and sustain the beauty of Diné heritage by sharing their wisdom and knowledge with families and communities. All the while, honoring the learning and being responsible for sustaining wellness.

Tuba City Coordinated Approach to School Health

The goal of the Tuba City Coordinated Approach to School Health Program (formerly Navajo Coordinated School Health) is to bring diabetes prevention efforts and increased awareness to youth, their families, school personnel, school administration, tribal leaders and community members. Together with our strong desire and commitment for a healthier Nation, we are able to acquire, develop and refine the skills necessary for sustaining strong, active and healthy children of the future.

The Tuba City Coordinated Approach to School Health also addresses the impact of academic success as it relates to school health by providing opportunities and professional development for all involved in helping to improve the health and academic performances of our children.

Community Partnerships

The Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program has been very successful in developing and sustaining a Partnership Program with other local, tribal, county and state agencies.
